A former chairman of the National House of Traditional Leaders Inkosi Impiyezintombi Mzimela has died, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for traditional affairs said on Friday.

"Inkosi Mzimela was instrumental in the post-apartheid development of the institution of traditional leadership and in the establishment of its structures as we know them today," co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube said in a statement.

"Inkosi's sister Matric Mzimela has confirmed that Inkosi Mzimela passed away due to ill-health and had been in hospital for the past weeks."

Ncube said that the traditional leader who died on Christmas Day had been a man of integrity.

"He was fearless in raising his views even if there were unpopular," and had always ensured "solutions were found".
