Last week, the police were adamant that Zanokuhle Mbatha was linked to Meyiwa’s murder despite questions from his family about his whereabouts when the incident took place.

"We are confident he is linked to the crime and he will be charged with murder and robbery," divisional commissioner of detective services, Lieutenant-General Vinesh Moonoo, told journalists.

On Tuesday the charges against the man who lived close to singer Kelly Khumalo, were dropped due to lack of evidence.

Magistrate Daniel Thulare said: "From the submissions made by prosecutor Getrude Market the court has accepted that as of now there is not sufficient evidence to put Mr Mbatha to trial."

"I note the withdrawal of charges by the State against Mbatha and consequently the court orders the release of Mr Mbatha today."

The National Prosecutions Authority spokesperson, Nathi Mncube said, "When we received the docket, the information that was contained in the docket was that the person had been identified during the identification parade by two witnesses who were in the house when the offense was committed. "

Mncube says more evidence was given to them. "We then thought it would be fair to withdraw the charges and allow the police to continue with their investigation.

Outside of court, Orlando Pirates fans chanted songs of support dedicated to Meyiwa.

Speaking to DRUM, one of the fans, Zanele Jiyane said, "I'm hurt. The people who did it (Senzo's murder) are known to the people, why are they being hidden. I'm very sad, I feel like killing myself."

Zanele also added that she feels it will be difficult for  Mbatha to be accepted back to hiscommunity.
