Columnist David Bullard has laid criminal charges against the former editor of the Sunday Times, Mondli Makhanya, according to a report on Friday.

The charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice came almost four years after he was axed by the newspaper following a public outcry over a contentious Out to Lunch column, the Business Day reported.

The criminal case was logged at the Parkview police station in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Bullard alleged that he was handed a fraudulent document as evidence at a hearing at the Statutory Council for the Newspaper, Printing and Packaging industry in 2010.

The document -- another columnist's contract -- was submitted to the hearing by the newspaper as proof that Bullard's contract differed and that he had not been unfairly dismissed.
