A 23-year old man accused of killing his 4-year old niece appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate Court on Monday, after the body of Jasmin Pretorius was found stuffed under his bed on Sunday.

The case has been postponed until 7 January.

Jasmin was left in the care of her uncle and his boyfriend, along with Jasmin’s grandmother, while the father was out. Her uncle then reported her missing on Saturday then proceeded to lead a group of neighbours and police on a hunt for the girl.

According to The Star, the uncle confessed after “intense police questioning”.

“He first told police that he had sold the girl to Nigerian drug dealers for drugs, but after further police examination he again changed his story,” a source close to the investigation was quoted as saying.

Jasmin’s mother, who was deeply traumatised after hearing about her daughters horrific death, called for the incident to be an example to others.

“I just want justice for Jasmin. My little angel has touched the world. Everyone must know her story so this can stop happening to innocent babies,” Sasha Lee Bam was quoted as saying.

However, community members are reportedly blaming the negligence of the parents for the girl’s death.

“Community members are shouting at family members saying: if you guys weren’t drunk all the time Jasmine would have lived” tweeted Eyewitness News.

Thousands have taken to social media to voice their outrage, some even calling for the death penalty to be reinstated.
