Officers will be deployed to various parks in and around Johannesburg on Thursday in preparation for the high volumes of people planning to celebrate the Day of Goodwill, metro police said on Thursday.

Some of the parks to be monitored would be Zoo Lake, Florida Park, Thokoza Park and Bezuidenhout Park, JMPD Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

"We call on people to be vigilant and not to drink and drive."

Minnaar asked the public to be cautious when using fireworks.

He said they should only be lit between 7pm and 10pm, and should not to be used near animals. He called for adult supervision if they were being used by children.

Traffic in Johannesburg was quiet, Minnaar said.
