Two police officers were granted bail after they appeared in the Stilfontein Magistrate's Court on Friday for alleged illegal possession of copper cables North West police said.

Warrant officers Solomon Nkoe, 48, and Johan Dunhin, 40, were granted bail of R500, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

Ngubane said they were arrested on Thursday after they were allegedly found with at least 28 kilograms of Telkom copper cables.

"It is alleged that the members went to the scrap yard to sell copper cables on Wednesday and were paid an undisclosed amount of money," Ngubane said.

The owner of the yard then reported the incident when he was alerted that the copper was from police.

The two were expected in court again on May 17. The investigation continues.
