Cops without driver's licenses a shame on SAPS: IFP

The Inkatha Freedom Party in Gauteng (IFP-GP) has received with shock the revelation made by the MEC of Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature that 38 percent of Gauteng police officers do not have drivers licenses and this includes senior ranking officers.

This in number is estimated at 11 611 officers without drivers licenses, compared to the 18 872 who have the permits according to the report.

This is despite the fact that the South African Police Service Act clearly indicates that it is requirement for every candidate to have a drivers license.

"And what is more shocking to us as the IFP-GP is that how many of these law enforcers are driving state cars illegally? And what does this do to them providing this essential service and responding on time on emergencies?" Bonginkosi Dhlamini, IFP Caucus Leader in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, asked.

"It is against this disclosure that the IFP-GP extends its strong support to the call for a proper investigation into the whole matter and not only about drivers licenses but also the qualifications of these police officers."
