Labour federation Cosatu  claims that the docks of Cape Town are hiring Indian migrants, and wants Government to send them back home.

Cosatu’s Western Cape Regional Secretary Tony Ehrenreich said the work that the Indian welders are doing could be done by local artisans, who have historically worked for the shipping companies in the docks in Cape Town.

“Cosatu is calling on the Government to send these workers back to India, as South Africans can do the jobs. We have just seen the South African unemployment figures released, confirming that SA unemployment is rising and yet we are bringing in foreign workers to do our work in SA,” he said in a statement .

Ehrenreich said the federation would march on the docks on the May 24 and stop the jobs from continuing until SA workers are employed.

“We are not being xenophobic, but we are defending our jobs and our livelihoods in South Africa. The Department of Home Affairs must deal with this problem as a matter of urgency,” Ehrenreich sai.
