One person was shot and wounded and a paramedic's car was stolen in Cosmo City when residents ran riot on Wednesday after the court sheriff arrived to evict families from illegally built homes in the area, police and paramedics said.

"They removed one family from their home and demolished the home. Other residents got angry and started mobilising," Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said.

Officials were stopped from evicting other families and levelling their homes, shops were looted, and motorists using Malibongwe Drive were pelted with stones.

Police fired teargas and rubber bullets. No arrests had been made, Makhubela said.

"The situation is still tense and there are hundreds, thousands of people gathered," he said.

Malibongwe Drive in both directions was closed to traffic in the area.

The local outlets of Shoprite and KFC were closed. A police officer who did not want to be named said locals looted the KFC. Coca Cola cups, brown paper bags and a few squashed tomatoes lay in the road outside the fast food outlet.

Metro police officers were putting out fires in the streets that were littered with rocks and rubbish.

A delivery truck transporting food to the KFC was attacked, residents told a News24 reporter. The windows of the local recreation centre had been smashed with stones. As the rain came down protesters dispersed.

A paramedic on the scene who did not want to be named said one person was treated for multiple gunshot wounds.

"When the patient was being brought in, a group started throwing stones at them, so they ran into a house. And when they came out, everything was quiet and the response car was gone."

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar denied a report that a metro police officer had been injured.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said they had treated one person who had been assaulted, and that residents were throwing stones at motorists. She could not confirm a rumour that a paramedic crew had been attacked.

“All crew members are fine,” she said.
