It will cost more than R20 million to upgrade the Cape Town city hall, according to a report on Monday.

The Cape Argus reported that the upgrade was part of a "turnaround strategy" put in place in 2009.

Repairs to the entire roof would cost about R15m. Upgrades to the auditorium about R6m and to the electrical system about R2m.

The city planned to complete the large-scale projects in the next two to three years.

Since 2009, it had completed smaller projects such as refurbishing toilets, at a cost of R1m.

The building had been in use since 1905.
