DA call for Mpumalanga transport subsidies

The Mpumalanga provincial government must ease the burden of rapidly rising costs on Thembisile Hani residents, the Democratic Alliance said on Thursday.

"The provincial government must take a two-fold approach to dealing with this matter... to ease the financial burden and family responsibilities of commuters," said DA spokesman Willie Venter.

The DA is advocating implementing the Moloto Rail Corridor project to deal with the matter.

"The provincial government must pressure national government to implement the Moloto Rail Corridor project as soon as possible," said Venter.

The project was earmarked to launch in 2008 and was expected to improve living standards of the residents.

The commuter line was planned to link residents of the former KwaNdebele homeland to Gauteng.

Commuters have been hit by a 15 percent price increase by bus services this month, due to increased fuel and operational costs.

The DA added the province should consider subsiding transport services to Gauteng, as Putco provided transportation to thousands of residents working there.
