Democratic Alliance leaders, including Mmusi Maimane, have been wrapped up in a sex scandal they have vehemently denied to have taken place.

Last week, different media outlets broke the news about an anonymous email that was circulated about head of DA hopefuls Mmaimane and Wilmot James as well as Maimane's running mate for federal chairperson, Athol Trollip.

It is alleged that the sender of the email has been angered by the men in the opposition party "who have made it a special pastime to choose women in the party to be their plaything."

The author also claims that they were tired of being "brushed aside by a system that protects men that use their power to get away with the worst misogyny against women," as quoted by News24.

The email also outlines how these party leaders hit on female staffers, have sexual relations with them in return for positions and it also names a female staff member who had an "open affair" with one of the men but she was eventually fired. City Press reports that the email was meant to be sent to 1 500 delegates who were set to gather at the party's congress over the weekend in Port Elizabeth but was predominantly sent to those residing Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Other leaders allegedly fingered as culprits for inappropriate behaviour include the party's chief whip John Steenhuisen, MP Gavin Davis and DA CEO Paul Boughey. In a response to the email, Maimane, James and Trollip have allegedly released a joint statement via Maimane's campaign manager Geordin Hill-Lewis. "We condemn this email and its anonymous author in the strongest terms," Hill-Lewis has been quoted as saying. "This is negative, false and destructive and it does nothing but harm the interests of the party that we are both running to lead and serve...we reject it entirely, and suggest that congress delegates do the same" Hill-Lewis allegedly stated in the press release.

A complaint has since been lodged with the party's electoral officer.
