The DA has welcomed the decision to place the Emalahleni (Witbank) municipality in Mpumalanga under provincial administration.

"The intervention follows months of [Democratic Alliance] pressure on the provincial government to intervene, particularly in terms of the Witbank water crisis," Emalahleni local council caucus leader Koos Venter said in a statement on Thursday.

"[This] comes at a time when the DA has begun seeking legal action against the municipality to oblige them to deliver services," he said.

Emalahleni and Bushbuckridge were placed under administration for six months following a provincial cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

The intervention is in terms of Section 139 (1)(b) of the Constitution.

Venter said Emalahleni had been investigated by the SA Human Rights Commission and the Public Protector.

The DA called on co-operative governance MEC Simon Skhosana to ensure that the administrator was suitably qualified, competent, and impartial.

"The DA declares its willingness to work with the administrator during the six-month period, and offers our full co-operation to address residents' service delivery concerns," said Venter.
