Jailed disgraced former abaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo is said to be receiving preferential treatment in prison, much to the dismay of prison officials.

Dalindyebo is serving a 12-year sentence at the East London Medium C Correctional Centre for murder, arson and defeating the ends of justice.

The self-confessed dagga-smoking monarch’s cell has reportedly been spruced up with a new mattress being brought in, including a bar fridge, new kettle and microwave.

According to the Daily Dispatch newspaper, Dalindyebo’s cell was also painted soon after he moved in from Mthatha’s Wellington Maximum Prison where he handed himself on 30 December 2015.

But Department of Correctional Services Provincial Commissioner Nkosinathi Breakfast has denied that the controversial former ruler is receiving special treatment.

Reports also suggest that the former king was recently visited by Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha, but both the ministers’ spokespeople have vehemently denied this.

Meanwhile, irate warders told how they were ordered to address Dalindyebo as “King”. And despite being a prisoner, Dalindyebo wears civilian clothes and refuses to wear the orange attire for inmates.
