There is a deep class contradiction which is the underlying factor of the division within Cosatu's leadership, suspended general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said.

There is a deep class contradiction which is the underlying factor of the division within Cosatu's leadership, suspended general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said.

There were people within the federation who did not have the workers' best interest at heart, he told more than 300 delegates at a Numsa conference in Durban.

"There are people who think that Cosatu must just be a tool that can only be used to catch votes even if that is not advancing the interest of the workers.

"There would be people in an organisation who hide behind workers when their real intention is that they have ambitions to be in Cabinet and in Parliament," Vavi said.

He said corruption and rape accusations were being levelled against those leaders who were fighting for the workers interests within the Congress of SA Trade Unions.

Vavi had been put on special leave pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing relating to an affair with a junior employee at Cosatu.

In July, the employee accused him of rape. He said they had an affair. The woman subsequently withdrew a sexual harassment complaint against him.

Following his suspension, the National Union of Metalworkers SA (Numsa) lodged an application in the High Court in Johannesburg challenging the trade union federation's decision to suspend Vavi.
