Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has been hospitalised following a "persistent infection".

According to media reports, a released statement by the Arch's foundation states states that he was admitted to a hospital in Cape Town on Tuesday for an undisclosed but "persistent infection".

Tutu is a 15-year prostrate cancer survivor and this is not the first time he has been admitted for an infection, in 2013 he was hopitalised but there wasn't a detection of a new malignancy while in 2011 he was hospitalised for a minor elective surgery.

The 83-year-old's family hopes he will return home in a couple of days.

This news comes nearly two weeks after Tutu and his wife Leah renewed their vows to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

We wish him a speedy recovery.
