A psychologist told the High Court in Johannesburg that DJ Donald Sebolai, accused of killing his girlfriend, did not intentionally murder her

DJ Donald Sebolai, accused of killing his girlfriend, did not intentionally murder her, a psychologist told the High Court in Johannesburg sitting in Palm Ridge on Thursday.

"His version of what has happened could be a well-acted version but I think... that he did not intentionally stab her," professor Sathasivan Cooper said.

Cooper held three sessions with Sebolai a few days before his trial began.

The former Jozi FM DJ is facing a murder charge after his girlfriend, Dolly Tshabalala, was found dead on his bed in June last year. She had been stabbed with a steak knife from her pubic bone to her thigh. The knife punctured an artery, causing her to bleed to death.

Sebolai has testified that Tshabalala was injured as the pair of them struggled over a knife she had used to stab him in the hand. She had apparently accused him of cheating.

The couple had just returned to Sebolai's flat after a night of heavy drinking.

‘Intense remorse’

Cooper said Sebolai had shown the "feeling of intense remorse" and had stated that he "should have let her stab" him.

Cooper said based on Sebolai's demeanour and his mention of "self-blame", Sebolai wished that the incident had not happened.

On Wednesday, Cooper told the court that Sebolai showed signs of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

"During the course of the evaluation, a clinical image started to be clear of someone who had depression and receding symptoms of post-traumatic stress," said Cooper.

He had consulted Sebolai's sister and his former boss and had concluded that Sebolai was only a shadow of the fairly carefree individual he was before.

"The person I evaluated was physically quite hunched. His demeanour was not of a person facing a microphone making chit chat with his listeners," he said.

The trial continues.
