DJ Tira: back on track after divorce

THE house has undergone many changes in the past few weeks. It’s been given a fresh lick of paint, the furniture is new and modern and the large flat-screen TV makes you want to snuggle on the couch and reach for the remote.

You could say the differences in this home in Greyville, Durban, is a reflection of the change in its owner – a new start for a man who is starting over after a painful divorce.

Unlike a year ago, there are no pretty pictures or flowers to hint at a feminine touch. The empty cupboards and fridge bear testimony to the fact that this is now, once again, a bachelor pad. And DJ Tira, whose real name is Mthokozisi Khati, is happy to have it this way.

“I’m really glad to be back home,” the 33-year-old disc-spinner says, looking very much the king of his revamped castle.

“I moved back about six weeks ago because I wanted to give the place a new look before settling in. I wanted to make this place feel like my own again.”

Tira is welcoming as he ushers DRUM into the house he once shared with his exwife, Lale Ngcobo. He looks every inch the successful bachelor – casual but sexy in blue jeans and a black vest that shows off his new tattoos and muscular arms.

He had been living in an apartment on Durban’s beachfront after his split with Lale but is glad to be home now that she has found a place of her own (It’s time for me now, 3 June).

The couple were barely on speaking terms and their divorce became quite vicious, with Lale accusing him of being a bad husband who was never around. They’ve only recently made peace. “Last year was After the painful end of his marriage, DJ Tira has revamped his home and is making a fresh start.
