The farmers are rejoicing at the persistent rain that fell this whole week in some parts  of the country, but the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) are warning motorists to drive carefully in the wet conditions.

The wet weather has already claimed lives, with three people reported dead during floods in the North West province. Provincial government officials had been sent out to assess the damage the rain had caused.

The AA has sent out a warning statement on how to be vigilant and cautious in the wet weather.

“All drivers are urged to stay calm, adhere to the rules of the road, and arrive safely at their destinations,” the AA concluded.

Many still have to travel to workplaces with either private cars or taxis. The AA offers the following tips on how to tread carefully on the roads:

  • Ensure your headlights and brake lights are working
  • Switch on your headlights, especially when natural light is low. Remember this also alerts other drivers to your presence on the road
  • Ensure your windscreen and wipers are in good condition
  • Check that your tyres are in good shape
  • Don’t speed, and maintain a safe following distance
  • Buckle up
  • Don’t cross low-lying bridges, even if you think your car can make it
  • Keep your cellphone close and charged in case of emergency
