Kagiso New Media and Jacaranda FM have begun a pilot project to investigate the viability of using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to provide traffic updates to people in Gauteng.

Gauteng residents may notice something strange in the skies over the next few days. They're not UFOs or foreign intelligence operations being conducted: They are, in fact, traffic drones.

News24, is reporting that the drones will monitor the N1 and provide updates on traffic conditions during peak hours.

In addition to the updates being broadcast on Jacaranda FM, the public can log in to the website to follow the traffic news.

The pilot programme will run for 15 days from 07:00 to 08:00 and 16:00 to 17:00 daily and the company says that the drones have met all compliance requirements set by the Commercial Unmanned Aircraft Association of Southern Africa.
