The sons of a South African woman who was arrested for drug trafficking between Brazil and Portugal, will be brought back to South Africa.

"It is understood that while in Brazil, the mother was recruited into trafficking drugs between Brazil and Portugal," sicial development department spokesperson Lumka Oliphant said.

"She was arrested in Portugal where she is currently incarcerated awaiting trial."

The boys are seven and 13 and were left in Brazil and found living on the streets of Sao Paulo. Brazilian authorities referred them to the South African embassy.

Between 2008 and 2014, the South African government repatriated 18 South African children found in distress in foreign countries, Oliphant said.

The two boys would be placed in the care of foster parents nominated by their mother. They were expected to arrive on Thursday morning.
