Rating 4/5

Action. 2010. 101 min. with Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Robert de Niro and Michelle Rodriguez. Director: Robert Rodriguez. 18Vl.

If you missed the original Machete trailer – released nearly four years ago with director Rodriguez’s Planet Terror – the title and DVD box should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. It’s a lunatic mash-up of action, sex and violence delivered in an ’80s-style exploitation package coated with a cheesy and heavy-handed but passionate message about anti-immigrant sentiment in the US.

Machete (Trejo) isaMexican cop betrayed by his bosses who are in cahoots with the deadly drug boss Torrez, who kills Machete’s family. He flees to America where he finds himself a fugitive after a botched assassination attempt on a corrupt politician.

If you can stomach the cartoonish violence and dark humour, Machete is worth watching for its terrific casting. Will there ever be another movie with a cast as eclectic as one that includes Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Don Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba? Bonus: deleted scenes, commentary.
