Six officials from the education department's Modimolle, Limpopo district office have been arrested for allegedly creating ghost teachers and pocketing the salaries, the Hawks said on Monday.

"They are alleged to have pocketed more than R330,000 after renewing contracts of six teachers without their knowledge," spokesman Captain Paul Ramaloko said.

The officials, employed in the office's human resources and finance departments, allegedly received the money between August 2012 and April this year.

"The only thing that they changed were the bank accounts of the ghost teachers. The teachers had been in the system even after their contracts with the department were never renewed."

The four women and two men, aged between 27 and 60, face charges of fraud, corruption, and theft. They are expected to appear in the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
