The EFF has accused the ANC of abusing state resources saying that the handover of RDP houses to families in Marikina on Wednesday afternoon was an opportunist attempt at rallying supporters for the upcoming local government elections.

“The building and handing over of houses in Marikana by the Department of Human Settlement was turned into an ANC build-up programme towards its rally. This leaves no difference between party and state, a phenomena characteristic of dictatorships and despotic governments,” says Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, Parliamentary Spokesperson for the EFF.

Ndlozi describes the handing over of the houses in Marikana as a desperate attempt by the ANC to maintain its relevance in the community while ignoring the fact that families of deceased mine workers in the 2012 Marikana massacre are seeking financial compensation from the state.

“It is an attempt to silence the legitimate cry of the Marikana workers for justice and compensation which Government has failed to deliver on,” he says. “To this day, the victims of the Marikana massacre are neglected by Government; no one can say what is happening to the widows, orphans and the injured, if they have bread on the table, money to educate their children or if they had any Christmas at all.”

The EFF says while the Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu claims the building of the houses are to assist families who were affected by the tragedy, none of the victims’ families have been given houses.

“There is no amount of building houses that will erase the fact that those who presided over Marikana are still in Government today. Cyril Ramaphosa, Nathi Mthethwa, and Susan Shabangu were all rewarded with cabinet posts,” he says, “The delivering of houses is clearly not genuine and it seeks to further mobilize the Marikana community against the victims of the massacre who are not even beneficiaries of the project.”

The EFF has called on the community of Marikana to reject the ANC in the local government elections, saying their actions are corrupt and insensitive.
