The Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command's (EFFSC) victory in the SRC elections at NWU's Mahikeng campus was done without celebrities, free food, and free T-shirts, the party said

on Thursday.

EFFSC members were confronted by "enemy forces" that deployed "outdated personalities" in their bid to rally support for the elections, acting national spokesperson Lehlohonolo Mokoena said.

These celebrities were led by Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula, who Mokoena described as "pouting selfies" Mbalula.

He said when the ANC realised the celebrities were not having the desired effect, provincial MECs and Premier Supra Mahumapelo went to the Mafikeng campus and handed out free ANC T-shirts and food parcels in "the form of free KFC and braai to students".

Even with all this effort, the EFFSC still won the election.

‘Superior logic’

"The EFFSC was armed with nothing else but the message of economic freedom, decolonisation and an impressive record of student service," Mokoena said.

"They demonstrated that superior logic is stronger than attempts at vote buying through food parcels."

The election was a victory for democracy and the EFF saluted the NWU student body for using conscience and consciousness to vote.

"Students refused to be treated like empty heads with no capacity to think, where you simply throw free KFC at them and expect to get their votes," he said.

"MECs could not persuade students with any message except to give food parcels and students refused to be manipulated by people who have no superior and useful ideas to solve their problems."

On Wednesday, the EFF posted on its Twitter account: "NWU Mafikeng Campus SRC Results: EFF 6/SASCO 6. EFF won President & Academic Officer, constitutionally we are the winners."

NWU spokesperson Koos Degenaar confirmed the results.
