Elelwani, Ntshavheni wa Luruli’s first TshiVenda film, is up for an Oscar.

It had a great showing at the 2013 AMAA’s (African Movie Academy Awards), winning best actress in a leading role (Florence Masebe) and best production design. DRUM can reveal that the South African Academy Award Selection Committee and the National Film and Video Foundation have confirmed the movie as South Africa’s official entry into the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Annual Academy Awards.

It’s still early days, but the film will represent South Africa as the nominee for the 87th Oscars to be held in 2015.

Yesterday (2005) and Tsotsi which won Best Foreign Language Film category of the Annual Academy Awards in 2006 are South African films that have been represented at the Oscars.

“I’m still waiting to be told it’s a joke,” said Florence Masebe when we called her about the news. “I’m not done pinching myself. Literally! It’s a huge deal for us. Totally unexpected, especially when you’re overlooked so many times… It’s the best news ever. Thank you NFVF and The South African Academy Award Selection Committee.”
