Etv has withdrawn all its nominated shows and presenters from the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) which are taking place on Saturday, 10th March 2012.

The rumours have been doing the rounds for more than a week that the free- to- air television station has withdrawn all programming and presenter participation from the 2012 Saftas and we can confirm that the rumours are actually quite true.

Details as to why they are withdrawing from the Saftas still remain unknown but they promised to issue  a formal statement as soon as discussions are concluded [internally].

“The channel is not in a position to share its reasons at this stage and will do so once it has completed discussions with interested parties,” said Monde Twala, group head of e.tv channels.

He added, “e.tv remains committed to acknowledging the local film and television industry as a whole. It is unfortunate that we have had to withdraw our programming from the Saftas but we feel that it is necessary to do so in order to achieve greater organisation cohesion.”

The Safta representative said they are not yet in any position to comment on the matter as it’s still being discussed by the relevant parties within the organisation.

“e.tv recognises the work done the by NFVF (National Film and Video Fund) and is supportive of the establishment of an independent industry academy which will administer the Saftas,” Twala concluded.

E.tv shows that were nominated for the 2012 Saftas include Rhythm City, Scandal! and Club 808.
