A former South Africa international cricketer has been accused of rape.

According to the IOL website, the man played for the South African national team and took part in the 1992 Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

He is alleged to have raped a woman on Saturday evening after leaving a party in Cintsa, Eastern Cape.

According to the Daily Dispatch newspaper, the cricketer denied raping the woman and denied being informed about the accusation.

The matter is being investigated by police, who have taken statements from witnesses.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Khaya Tonjeni, said a case had been opened, but the man had not yet been formally charged.

Tonjeni said the cricketer would appear in an East London court once he had been arrested.

The man cannot be named until he has appeared in court.
