Nkuli M gets candid

Actor Nkululeko Tshirumbula or Nkuli M as many know him became popular when he acted in soapie Muvhango as Gundo Mukwevho. Nkuli hasn't been on TV for a while but  now he is back on ETV's Broken Vows as Andani.

DRUM caught up with the star to talk about being back on TV, growing up in an abusive home, his love for music and more.

So you are back on TV, how do you feel?

So excited and glad to be back and playing Andani is amazing. The storyline shows me that love conquers all and being a romantic at heart, the story resonates with me.

You were off our screens for a bit?

Yes , I was doing other things but the acting bug has been hunting me for a while and I am so excited to be back on. I am hoping and praying to be on TV more. And with the responses I have been getting from the fans I know I am on the right road.

You grew up in Pretoria right? Let's talk a bit about your upbringing.

I stayed in Pretoria for the first few years of my life and it wasn't easy, I witnessed my mother being physically abused by my father. My siblings and myself were also abused by him. He would chase us out of the house at 2 or 3 am in the morning when he was drunk. It was a very hard time for me and it's still an emotional story for me to speak about.

When did the abuse stop?

When my mother divorced him in 1996, that's when we moved away from him. My mother remarried a couple of years later to my stepdad who is still around and we then moved to the South of Johannesburg in Lenasia. Ever since then we have been a happy family.

You are very big on exercising and the gym,and there is a back story to that right?

Yes, I grew up a very skinny boy and I was teased a lot in high school, so it dainted my confidence a bit. So after high school I started working out to gain weight and tried being masculine, and it worked. I am no longer teased.

Now that you don't get bullied or teased so you gym for a lifestyle I figure?

Yes, definitely. I love the discipline that comes with gyming the commitment. I am always trying to push the potential my body can achieve. Fitness is a lifestyle.

What five things would people be surprised to know about you?

  • I am a very private person
  • Ngiyaphapha, but mostly to those people who know me well.
  • I have a great passion for cars and part time what I do is I tune cars.
  • I have a passion for business and am trying to venture into that.
  • I love music, I grew up in a musical family where my siblings either sing or play instruments. I for one play the drums. I am a pastor's child.

You are many women's MCM, who would you say is your Woman Crush?

I recently had the opportunity to work with actress and personality Mbali Nkosi and her  beauty and personality is something mind blowing. I respect her as a beautiful woman and as a woman in the industry, she is driven and has a great heart, and because of that she is my current Woman Crush.

And is Nkuli single or dating?

I am taken and very happy.
