The most important thing is being transparent from the get go- Musa

Polygamy isn't new to Africa and South Africa, but still many question; 'How does it work' and that is the question businessman Musa Mseleku and his four wives, Mamkhulu (First Wife), Mayeni (Second Wife), Makhumalo (Third Wife), and Mangwabe (Fourth Wife) want to answer and help see as they navigate a polygamous relationship on Mzansi magic new reality show Uthando neSthembu.

DRUM caught up with Musa to talk about his intentions with the show, managing four women, polygamy misconceptions and more.

So, why did you decide to do the show?

For my family and I it was about making a meaningful contribution to the lives of people who would like to follow the life we live. It was also to prevent the abuse that we have witnessed of the polygamous relationship unit. And also to discard any misconceptions that are out there.

The first episode airs today, how do you feel? Are you nervous at all?

I have mixed feelings. I am excited and also nervous but the most important thing is we are achieving our goals so we are ready for any criticism.

So what will people see on the show?

Reality. The real side of polygamy, nothing is staged. We will show that all that glitters isn't gold and it's not all roses but its just reality.

As a man who has four wives and has made this work for years, what does it take for a man to make it work?

It's about character, do you have the character to manage and make it work as a man. Most people say money but that comes later, after character.

And have you always wanted to have more than one wife or did 'life just happen'?

From a young age I always said I wanted to be in a polygamous relationship even before I knew what it meant. It's something I have always wanted.

And how do you keep everyone happy and meet all their needs? How does that work?

It's about having a set routine, which shouldn't change no matter what. That way everyone is happy and no one will think you favor one wife over the other. So even if you are tired you keep to that schedule, by doing so you make it work and I have made it work for years.

How hard was the initial process of getting a second wife?

That was quite difficult.

How so?

Convincing Mamkhulu (First Wife) to take Mayeni (Second Wife) was hard because making Mamkhulu understand that I want someone else but that doesnt diminsh my love for her and also letting Mayeni know that I love her as well as Mamkhulu was difficult and took time. However, over time we had an understanding and reached compromises and it worked.

Okay and what did that teach you that you want other men to learn?

The most important thing is to be truthful from the get go to all parties involved, that way the process is transparent.

Uthando neSthembu premieres tonight at 8pm on Mzansi Magic DSTV Channel 161
