ANC calls fake Baleka Mbete election posters a malicious campaign.

The National Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) and speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, says she is outraged by suggestions that she is behind the production and circulation of electronic posters and paraphernalia.

The posters are said to have her picture, lobbying for election as ANC President in 2017.

Mbete has denied being involved in the production of any of the posters, calling them “mischievous”.

Zizi Kodwa, spokesperson of the ANC says the tactics are aimed at tarnishing her reputation in the ANC and larger society.

“This position taken by the National Chairperson is line with the ANC’s stated directive that members of the ANC, its structures and League must desist from divisive behaviour which undermine the unity and cohesion of the ANC towards the 54th National Conference and beyond,” he says.

“Such acts are clearly the work of so-called lobbyists seeking to erode unity within the organisation and divide the movement by pitting comrade against Comrade Mbete.”

According to Kodwa, Mbete has called on those behind the “malicious campaign” to stop using her name.
