Shattered family, friends and fans mourned the passing of kwaito legend Mandoza, who lost his battle with cancer

His breakout hit song Nkalakatha united South Africans of all races and became an anthem at events across the country.

Every time he took to the stage to perform it he was clad in a trademark leather jacket which showed off his well-toned six-pack, much to the delight of his female fans. There is no doubt that Mduduzi “Mandoza” Tshabalala’s music will remain etched in the minds of his fans for many years to come.

When the 38-year-old kwaito legend first spoke out about his long battle with cancer, which it seemed he had finally won (Mandoza’s fiercest fight, 5 May), the country rallied around him and his family offering love and support.

He was so determined to fight the disease that he went on stage to perform one last time at the SABC Thank You Concert, held at Orlando Stadium recently. And so, it was with shock that the country woke up to the sad news that the star had succumbed to cancer on Sunday 18 September.

Judging by the outpouring of tributes from his peers, fans and friends, there’s no denying he was a well loved legend.
