Father of Freedom Charter dies: Report

The man who was instrumental in the drafting of the Freedom Charter has died, according to a report on Monday.

Alan Lipman, 88, died at his Johannesburg home, The Star newspaper reported.

Lipman played a major role in the drafting of the Freedom Charter in 1955. The document is the foundation of the country's Constitution.

His wife, Beata, 63, is believed to have hand-written the original Charter, the newspaper reported.

Lipman joined the SA Communist Party while he was studying architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1948.

He left the party in 1956 and joined the African National Congress.

According to the newspaper, Lipman was disillusioned with the ANC in recent times.
