Fikile and Nozuko Mbalula after the storm

It’s been labelled one of the most controversial sex scandals of our time: a high-profile government minister cheats on his wife with a young and sexy model.

During one of their meetings they have sex and the condom bursts. The mistress then claims sports and recreation minister Fikile Mbalula made her pregnant during one of their steamy encounters – on the day they met at a party hosted by a friend, to be specific.

Mbalula tries to get rid of the problem by giving her R10 000 for an abortion. But instead the mistress, 28-year-old Joyce Molamu, becomes greedy, demanding a further R40 000 from her now former lover to keep quiet.

When the former ANC Youth League leader doesn’t give in to her threats, she spills the beans. And so, the day after the minister celebrated his 40th birthday, South Africa woke up to shocking headlines splashed

all over the Sunday papers revealing the dirty secret. You could easily mistake all this for scenes from a dramatic movie, but this is the real-life drama that rocked the Mbalula family late last year.

Soon after the stories about his cheating were published, Mbalula showed remorse and apologised. “I have apologised to my family, particularly my wife, as I should have known better,” he declared.

“I have been trying to deal with this matter in a private manner for the past three months and when it became clear to me that woman was prepared to extort money, I decided to cease all communication with her as I was not prepared to be blackmailed,” he was quoted saying.
