The murderer of slain hip hop artist Nkululeko Flabba Habedi would on Wednesday spend her first night behind bars.

While Sindisiwe Manqele's legal team had pulled out all the stops to keep her out of jail following her conviction, Judge Solly Sithole said they had failed to lodge a fresh bail application.

The head of the legal team, Norman Makhubele, was also not present in court.

Manqele was reduced to tears as she headed down to the cells with her face still covered by her head scarf.

Moments earlier, Sithole had dismissed Manqele's version that she acted in self-defence when she plunged a knife into Habedi's heart, instantly killing him.

While Manqele had stated that she stabbed Habedi in attempt to get away from him, Sithole said her actions were not proportional to the threat she faced.

Friends of Manqele attempted to console her as she sobbed in the dock following the ruling.

The 26-year-old Manqele recently suffered another hard blow after one of the members of her legal team confirmed that her father had died.

During her testimony several weeks ago, Manqele had told the court that she was an only child after losing both her mother and brother several years ago.

Manqele was expected to return to court on Thursday.

Amanda Vilakazi, who is part of her legal team, said they would be applying for bail on Thursday.
