This week Kenyan social media was abuzz about the romance between Sarika Patel and Timothy Khamala.

Cynics may have tried to end the unlikely relationship between two Kenyans, but they underestimated the power of true love.  This week Kenyan social media was abuzz about the romance between Sarika Patel (24), of Indian descent, and Timothy Khamala (25) from the Bukusu ethnic group, with the hashtag #MyBukusuDarling trending on Twitter after the couple’s love story was shown on a television show.

Apart from the tiny issue of race, there’s a class element to their story: Sarika is the daughter of a wealthy businessman, while Timothy is from a poor family who live in a simple mud hut. It was love at first sight when the pair first met four years ago, when Sarika saw Timothy washing her father's car.

“I liked him the moment I saw him . . . [there] were two of them washing the vehicle and I remember ejecting the other fellow just to be closer to Timothy. I was crazy I tell you,” Sarika told The Standard newspaper.

She added: “He is the most understanding man I have ever met. He makes me feel like a woman. He is my second lovem but definitely unmatched to the first. He is golden.”

Now, Sarika has moved in with Timothy and they plan to get married. Her family are said to strongly disapprove.
