Shops belonging to foreigners were looted in Durban's Umlazi township, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

"There were incidents that were reported at Umlazi last night where some of the foreigner's shops were looted," police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said.

"Police immediately responded and calmed the situation down."

Zwane did not provide any further details and there were no immediate reports of injuries.

SAFM reported that the shops being looted belonged to Somalis. Numerous reports of the looting were tweeted by residents. Drama student Ntobe Dube (@ntobedube) tweeted: "Looting taking place in Umlazi, South of Durban. While police guard one shop the looters move to the next." News24
