The former Bafana Bafana and Premier Soccer League player arrested for allegedly attempting to rob a truck carrying cigarettes in Boksburg North on Thursday may be linked to a string of other crimes.

Gauteng police said the player, who has not yet been named, was arrested along with ten others in an intelligence driven operation.

An impeccably placed source, who could not be named, said the player had been linked to a cash-in-transit robbery in February in Ogies, Mpumalanga.

The source said that the player had been arrested before his gang could allegedly affect a heist on an armoured vehicle.

They were found with a military grade signal jammer in the car.

The player appeared in court and was released on R15 000 bail.

It is further understood that he and four Zimbabweans were arrested after they were allegedly found in possession of stolen goods worth R4.2m in 2011.

At the time he was out on bail for a similar incident.

For the latest incident, the soccer star will appear in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Foiled robbery

"The investigating team of the province and crime intelligence were following information of people who planned to hijack a cigarette truck," said police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela.

"They made contact with those alleged 10 suspects and arrested them before they could hijack the truck. Among them two were found wearing full Johannesburg Metro Police Department uniforms, and one of the 10 is also a former PSL and Bafana Bafana player." The men were also found in possession of an illegal jamming device when they were arrested at around 17:00 on Wednesday. They face charges of armed robbery, impersonating police and being found in possession of an illegal jamming device. News24
