Four great ideas with popcorn

Is it snack time or playtime? It’s both with these great ideas with popcorn. Moms know kids can’t get enough of snacking and fun activities. Why not combine them and save money too – try these smart ideas that won’t break the bank, and will keep your kids entertained and their hunger at bay.

Popcorn necklace and bracelets

Preparation: 20 min

You need:

  • Needle and thread
  • 750 ml (3 c) popped popcorn
  • 250 ml (1 c) jellybeans
  • 250 ml (1 c) chocolate-coated
  • Raisins or shortbread

Do this:

1 Take double the length of thread you need for a bracelet or necklace, plus an extra 15 cm, and thread through the needle. Knot the ends together.

2 Thread the needle through 2-3 popped corn kernels, followed by 2-3 jellybeans and a chocolate sweet.

3 Repeat until long enough, then knot the ends together.

Popcorn with cheesy sprinkle

Preparation: 5 min

You need:

  • 5 ml (1 t) paprika
  • 15 ml (1 T) cheese sprinkle
  • 750 ml (3 c) popped popcorn
  • Paper cones

Do this:

1 Mix the paprika and cheese sprinkle and toss the mixture through the popcorn.

2 Fill the paper cones and serve.

Colourful popcorn cups

Preparation: 15 min

Drying: 2 hours

You need:

  • 150 g popped popcorn
  • 750 ml (3 c) icing sugar
  • Food colouring in 3 colours of your choice
  • 180 ml (¾ c) cold water
  • Ice cream cone cups

Do this:

1 Divide the popcorn into 3 bowls.

2 Divide the icing sugar among 3 measuring jugs.

3 Mix 60 ml (¼ c) cold water with each of the food colourings and mix with the icing sugar.

4 Pour the coloured icing sugar over the popcorn and mix through until all the popcorn is coated.

5 Spread each colour popcorn on a baking sheet and allow to dry.

6 Fill cone cups with the coloured popcorn.

Popcorn bar treats

Preparation: 5 min

Baking: 10-12 min

Cooling: 2 hours

Makes 12 bars

You need:

  • 750 ml (3 c) popped popcorn
  • 125 ml (½ c) raisins
  • 80 ml (¹/3 c) chocolate chips
  • 125 ml (½ c) brown sugar
  • 80 ml (¹/3 c) water
  • 45 ml (3 T) honey
  • 90 g dark chocolate

Do this:

1 Preheat the oven to 180 °C and grease a 30 x 20 cm baking sheet.

2 Mix the popcorn, raisins and chocolate chips and pour into the baking sheet.

3 In a small pot heat the sugar, water and honey over low heat until the liquid has reduced by half.

4 Pour the warm sugar syrup over the popcorn and bake. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet. Cut into bars.

5 Melt the dark chocolate in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute, stirring after 30 seconds. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the bars before serving.
