Whether it’s fitness, finances, being more organised or spending more time with the people you love, there’s still plenty of time to get it right.

Do your New Year’s resolutions seem like a distant memory already?

Lifestall mall Eden on the Bay in Cape Town has devised these four ways to keep those good habits alive this year:

  1. Get active without spending money

Make the most of our long summer days, whether you’re a morning or evening person. Go for a brisk walk in the neighbourhood before going to work or when you come home. Take a family member with you for company – that way you can exercise and enjoy quality time with someone you love. Over the weekend, you can go for a park run or walk in your area (they are free) or, if you want a greater challenge, a hike.

  1. Surround yourself with the right people

Spend time with people who are positive and who can encourage you to keep up the effort you’re putting into reaching your goals. Ask for advice when you need it. Make time to meet up with friends for coffee or a drink at a venue you enjoy.

  1. Family time

Make it a priority to spend quality time with your family. Have a regular date night with your partner or a weekly time to hang out with your children. Choose an appropriate activity they will enjoy. It could be as simple as going out for ice cream, breakfast on a Saturday morning or strolling around a garden centre. Go for a picnic at a scenic parks or the beach, if you live near the sea.

  1. Spoil yourself

Have some “me-time” – whatever that means for you. If a manicure, massage or retail therapy helps you unwind, go for it, while keeping an eye on your budget.

Start small with manageable goals that will help you to keep going. Remember that it takes about two weeks to develop a new habit.
