A man who raped and robbed several women in the Free State has been sentenced to life in prison, police said on Thursday.

Sydney Manye, 37, from Thaba Nchu, was handed a life sentence by the Bloemfontein High Court on Wednesday.

He was sentenced to a total of 37 years for robbery, 36 years plus a life sentence for rape, and 7 years for attempted rape.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Thabo Litabe said Manye preyed on six women, aged 13 and 30, between 2000 and 2014.

He was first arrested in 2012 after he raped a woman near a railway line in Bloemfontein.

“He had just raped the woman when a patrolling police vehicle passed nearby the scene and the victim reported the incident. Following the woman’s failure to attend court proceedings, the case was withdrawn from the court roll and the accused was released,” Litabe said.

Manye was re-arrested on 17 June 2015 after DNA results linked him to a number of rapes.

“One less pervert in society is a great achievement for us as the police," Free State police commissioner Lieutenant General Thabethe Mpembe said.

"Our streets will be safer without people who think they can do as they please.”
