A man implicated in the gang rape of a Soweto teengaer appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Friday despite earlier confusion about whether he would appear, Gauteng police said.

"This is because the preliminary investigation has been finalised and as we speak he is now in court," said Lt-Col Tshisikhawe Ndou.

"We decided this because it is still early in the day and there is no reason to keep him until Monday."

Earlier, media were informed by police that the man, who was due to appear on Friday, would instead appear on Monday.

No reason was given for this and reporters who had converged at the courthouse left.

The man is accused of holding a 17-year-old girl against her will at his shack in Braamfischerville. She was found on Wednesday. The girl had gone missing on March 21.

Seven others, including minors who matched the descriptions of the rapists seen in a cellphone video of the gang-rape, appeared in court on Thursday.

Their case was postponed until April 25 for further investigation.
