A report on the state of schools in KZN revealed that a district called uThungu has inflated school pupils in that area to the tune of 200 000.

Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni said this was being done in an attempt to gain extra resources.

An investigation into the district by the national and provincial education departments uncovered the scandal.

"We really need to find out if we really have 2.6 million learners," Nkonyeni was quoted as saying.

She said the investigation would be expanded to include the province's 11 other teaching districts and warned school principals that they would be charged with fraud if they were found to have inflated pupil numbers.
