Gospel artists gathered outside Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria to pray for ailing former President Nelson Mandela.

The harem of gospel artists included Deborah Fraser, Solly Mahlangu, Israel Mosehla and Zanele Mbokazi.

"Silver and gold we don't have, but we have the name of Jesus Christ. That is what we are giving him and the family.

"We as gospel artists and musicians in general are here to say we love, respect and still need him," said Mbokazi, organiser of the Crown Gospel Awards.

Gospel singer Deborah Fraser speaking to Sapa urged South Africans to pray for Madiba as the country and world still needed him
