Sentencing of Griekwastad teen convicted of 3 murders and rape to continue

Sentencing procedures against the young Griekwastad murderer will continue in the Northern Cape High Court on Thursday.

The 17-year-old boy has been convicted of three murders and rape.

On March 27, the court found him guilty of the murders of Griekwastad farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, his wife Christel, 43, and their daughter Marthella, 14. They were shot dead on their farm Naauwhoek on April 6, 2012.

He was also found guilty of raping the girl and lying to police.

On Wednesday, Hannes Cloete for the State said the witness testifying for the Griekwastad farm killer was biased and subjective.

"I never thought I would say it as a prosecutor, that I would question an expert's bias," Cloete said during cross-examination of criminologist Dr Eon Sonnekus.

Cloete submitted that Sonnekus's answers were intended to make the 17-year-old killer look better... "every answer from you," he said.

Sonnekus denied this. He said he knew the court found the boy lied and that he did not believe everything the boy said.

Cloete submitted that Sonnekus's subjective approach did not belong in court.
