Pietermaritzburg - A traditional healer’s flight of fancy was cut short when she was arrested by police on Tuesday after allegedly fleecing a customer out of over R130 000.

The healer had been operating out of Clermont near Durban, but had fled to Pietermaritzburg where she was finally collared by officers.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said that the woman had been in hiding, after an irked customer had gone to the authorities.

“It is alleged that the complainant heard an advert on a local radio station of a healer who can assist with work related issues, financial problems, bad luck and [could] also multiply money through ancestors,” he said.

“The victim arranged to consult this traditional healer who then advised her to pay a sum of R32 000 up front and further advised her to resign from her employment as her ancestors had directed.

“The victim was then asked to furnish a further R100 000 from her resignation money in order for the ancestors to multiply it. It is alleged that the suspect stole the victim’s money and replaced it with counterfeit money and blank papers,” Naicker said.

"When the unemployed victim realised she had been duped she reported [it] and following an intensive investigation, police traced the suspect to Pietermaritzburg where she was apprehended and charged with theft. She will appear at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon,” he added.
