A 25 year old man has been arrested for attempted murder and the possession of an unlicensed firearm after a shoot-out with the SAPS over the weekend.

The incident occurred on Friday in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal, when an unnamed victim was allegedly hijacked of his Hyundai i10 by three unknown gunmen, who shot him in the leg. The victim was rushed to hospital and a case of car hijacking and attempted murder was opened at Amanzimtoti police station.

The following day, the SAPS and a tracking company recovered the hijacked vehicle, which was carrying four suspects. The suspects fired shots at members of the SAPS and a gun battle ensued.

One suspect was injured and the others fled on foot.

The injured suspect was arrested and taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard. He will be charged with attempted murder and the possession of an unlicensed firearm. He will also be linked to the high jacking.

Police are investigating whether the firearm he used can be linked to other crimes.

KZN Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, advises the other suspects to hand themselves over to the police, as the SAPS will continue to pursue them until they are arrested.

A date will soon be set for the suspect’s first appearance at the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court.
