The soapie is breaking new ground

We have watched thousands of series, soapies and films showing the lives and drama of fashion, advertising and business empire owners. Now it's time for us to see the drama behind a Hip Hop empire.

In a ground breaking move Fox television just premiered its first African American hip hop music themed soapie Empire. The series which is a collaboration between Lee Daniels and Danny Strong from the Oscar nominated 2013 The Butler was inspired on the life of hip hop mogul Sean Combs.

Writer Danny says he is was listening to the radio when Combs and his family was being interviewed. He then called director Lee and the dream was born.

At the helm of the series is Lucious Lyon (played by Terrence Howard) who has just found out he has a terminal illness as the soapie starts. Lucious has to now make the decision of who of his three sons to hand his empire to while dealing with his ex wife Cookie (Taraji P Henson) who has just been released from jail and wants her share of the company.

The show is running on Fox in America and started on 7th January. No word yet on whether it will reach Mzansi or African shores, only time will tell.
