A homeless man was shot dead on an open piece of land in Atterbury Road, Pretoria, on Tuesday after a smash-and-grab, police said.

Captain Colette Weilbach said a 20-year-old woman's handbag, her iPad and cellphone were stolen from the front seat of her car in a smash-and-grab in Garsfontein.

She said the woman contacted her boyfriend, who traced the iPad signal to the open piece of land. Armed with a handgun, he followed the signal on foot.

"Homeless people who gathered under the trees saw him and started to run away. The boyfriend fired shots in their direction," she said.

"Police officers who happened to be at the filling station [nearby], heard the shots and went to investigate. They discovered the body of a man, close to the area where the shots were fired, with a bullet wound to the head."

Weilbach said the 25-year old man was arrested and charged with murder.

Police officers continued to trace the iPad signal and arrested four men, aged between 16 and 30, in possession of the stolen item.

The men were expected to appear soon in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.
