The Congress of the People's (COPE) Mosiuoa Lekota has officially signed a declaration of his availability to serve as party president.

SABC reports that Cope will be  holding its first national congress.

"Among other things the business of the congress will be to amend the constitution, to discuss and refine policy positions and then of course to elect the leadership of the party," Lekota is quoted as saying.

"All members of the party are available to stand for any position that they feel they can serve competently in. So I've made myself available for the position in that context," he added.
